A few years ago, Wisconsin passed legislation phasing out state income taxes on Social Security benefits, which resulted in the elimination of the state taxation of Social Security benefits effective January 1, 2008. Until then, it had been one of only a handful of states to tax Social Security benefits. Now the decision to phase out taxes on benefits is being questioned in an AP article appearing in my local paper. The focus of the article is on the wisdom of the 2005 legislation in light of the current state budget problems. I don’t know why this story is appearing now as the phase out of state taxes on Social Security benefits went into effect in January and there doesn’t appear to be any push to renew taxation of benefits.
